What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art with roots in traditional Japanese jiu-jitsu. In 1914, a Japanese named Mitsuyo Maeda — also known as Count Koma — arrived in Brazil and began teaching his techniques in Belém do Pará. Among his students was Carlos Gracie, who, together with his younger brother Hélio, helped shape and transform the art.
Hélio, being smaller in stature and with delicate health, adapted the techniques to rely less on physical strength and more on leverage, timing, and positioning. This made the art highly effective for people of all body types. The Gracie family went on to demonstrate through countless matches that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu allows a smaller, weaker practitioner to successfully defend against a larger, stronger opponent.
Over time, BJJ evolved beyond self-defence into a way of life — emphasising discipline, respect, and continuous learning. Today, it is practised worldwide both as a martial art and a competitive sport, and it remains one of the most effective forms of grappling and ground fighting.
